Many people ask us about the imposing building that has been home to the Black Dog since 2005, a building that exudes character and has a wonderfully long and rich history. The building itself dates back to 1850 and has been at the very heart of life in the village of Bayfield, this lovely little village perched on the edge of beautiful Lake Huron, for over 160 years. The oldest commercial building on the main street of Bayfield, it started out as Edwards Cash Store (as the historical plaque on our building states) the town’s first general store. In fact, we have a bundle of original documents from that time, invoice books and statements and the like, all written in beautiful longhand, that show the sorts of things that would have been for sale at that time – fabric, clothing, candles, dried fruit and nuts, flour, sugar, tea and much more.blank right arrow
